Copa America Final - Argentina vs Brazil

Argentina has won the Copa America tournament a total of 14 times since the beginning in 1916. Uruguay is tied with 14 championships. Interestingly enough, Brazil has only won 7 times, but they have won 3 of the last 4 Copa America titles. The last victory was at the expense of Argentina in 2004 in Peru with Brazil winning the tournament 4-2 in penalties. Argentina hasn’t won the tournament since 1993, but they have assembled together a strong squad and are clearly the favorites in this tournament.

First Half

4′ Juan Baptista scores a spectacular goal. Brazil 1-0.

8′ Riquelme’s shot hits the goal post. The pass came from Veron’s header.

38′ Loose ball in the box. Riquelme’s shot was parried away by Dino.

40′ Roberto Ayala slides and scores an auto gol. Brazil 2-0.

Second Half

57′ Aimar comes in for Cambiasso. Argentina is starting to press.

67 Gonzalez comes in for Veron.

68′ Brazil counters. Alves scores. Brazil 3-0.

89′ 90′ Two more subs for Brazil.

93 Game over.

Brazil are Copa America Champions.

Brazil and Argentina are in the Copa America Final. Did we expect anyone else? Who will win? To me, when Ronaldhino and Kaka were omitted from Brazil’s roster, that pretty much decided the outcome of the Copa America Final. Brazil will not be as strong. Argentina in the other hand, brought in their full A squad. So, expect nothing less from the Argies. Argentina over Brazil. Argentina will be crowned champions.

Third Place
Uruguay vs Mexico. Mexico had a tough loss against a very-talented Argentinian team. The desire and heart was there at the beginning, but Mexico unraveled when Argentina scored the second goal. Uruguay is a very scrappy team and very solid in defense. They are more organized and find ways to score goals. This is a tough game to predict. I think will Mexico will rebound and win 2-1. That’s if they find the net, which seems to be the Achilles heel of Mexico.

Argentina beat Mexico tonight to reach the Copa America Finals. Argentina will play Brazil in the Finals next Sunday. Argentina opened up the scoring when Gabriel Heinze guided home a chip from Juan Riquelme coming from a freekick to give Argentina the 1-0 lead just prior to the end of half.

Argentina scored their second goal in the 61st minute from a lovely chip from Leonil Messi over Osvaldo Sanchez’ head. Tevez found Messi on the right side all alone. Sanchez tried to come out, but Messi’s chip was a thing of beauty. Tevez is credited with an assist. The third goal came when Rafa Marquez fouled Tevez inside the penalty box. The ref called the penalty without any hesitation. Riquelme took the penalty. 3-0 Argentina.

With the win, Argentina will play Brazil in the Final, the same two teams the last time around with Brazil winning in penalty kicks.

Brazil drew first blood scoring in 13th minute when Maicon pounced on a deflection. Forlan equalized for Uruguay in the 36th. Baptista scored to give Brazil the edge as the half drew to a close. Abreu equalized in the 69th minute to give Uruguay a much needed goal. The last 20 minutes went with neither team scoring. The game ended at 2-2. On to penalties.

Both teams converted 4 penalty kicks each after 5 rounds. Now, it will come down to one kick each. Brazil missed its 6th kick hitting the left post. Uruguay can win it here with a goal. Uruguay misses. The ball hit the right post. Unbelievable. Round 7. Brazil makes its 7th kick. Uruguay has to score. The kick was stopped by Doni. Brazil wins. They are going to the Finals.

It looks like Doni surged forward before the kick. The Uruguayans are protesting the call, but the ref is not having it. This game is over.

Brazil will play in the Finals.

Forlan slotted the ball to the right of the Venezuelan keeper to start the scoring for Uruguay.
In the second half, Pablo Garcia scored from a well placed blast in the upper 90 to give Uruguay a 2-1 lead. Uruguay added two more goals in the waning moments of the game to make it a 4-1 match. Goals from Rodriguez and another goal from Forlan gave the visitors a well-deserved win.
